Little Dawley About Little Dawley Little Dawley is a small village, which has steadily grown over the past few decades.
Little Dawley History Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, in the middle ages Dawley was considered to be of military importance and a castle was built. This was not the usual castle, but a fortified manor house. Supposed to look similar to the one at Stokesay. It was supposedly built in 1316 by the nobleman William De Morton. The castle was then acquired by Richard Fitz Alan Earl of Arundel. The castle became owned by the crown, when Richard Fitz Alan was executed by the then king Richard II. In 1399 Richard II was overthrown by Henry IV. Dawley Castle was given back to Richard's son Thomas, but abandoned by him shortly after. In 1648 permission was given to the "Committee of Shropshire" to demolish Dawley Castle. All the stonework was stolen and probably used to create other buildings around the area. The exact location of the Castle is unknown, but looking at the area there are give aways as to where it might of been. We have Castle Pools, Castlefields Way, Castle Furnace and Castle Colliery.
