Called up to serve in the R.A.O.C. on August 1st 1940. Trained at Victoria barracks, Portsmouth. Set sail March 1941 for Egypt, arrived May 1941, where he joined Montgomery's 8th army. fought in the Middle East, Sicily and Italy, then back to Scotland 1944. Went over to France June 12th 1944, still under Monty's command, but attached to the 21st army group. Travelled through France and into Belgium. He was awarded "A Certificate of Merit" from Field Marshall Montgomery, for good service and great devotion to duty, in North west Europe. He captured three saboteurs single handed in Belgium 1944.
